FAQ’s Categories
Q: What age groups do you cater to?
We provide training for children aged 5 to 16 years old, with programs tailored for different age groups and skill levels.
Q: Does my child need previous basketball experience?
No! We welcome complete beginners in our Foundation Program. For our Advanced Program, we recommend at least 6 months of basketball experience.
Q: Do you offer trial classes?
Yes! We offer trial classes for $40. This allows your child to experience our coaching style before committing to a full term.
Q: What should my child bring to training?
Please bring:
- Your own basketball
- Athletic shoes with non-marking soles
- Water bottle
- Comfortable athletic clothing
Q: How does block booking work?
Training is offered in 10-week terms. Parents must pre-register and prepay for the entire block before the first session begins.
Q: What payment methods do you accept?
We accept payment via Bank Transfer. Payment is processed securely and directly into our company account.
Q: Can I get a refund if my child can't attend?
Block bookings are non-refundable after the first session. However, we may offer make-up classes for missed sessions subject to availability.
Q: When does registration open for the next term?
Registration usually opens a few weeks before the start of each school term. New students are welcome to join at any time during the term, and fees will be adjusted based on the remaining weeks.
Q: How many children are in each class?
We maintain small group sizes to ensure each child receives adequate attention and coaching.
What is the difference between Rookies, Foundation, Development and Advanced programs?
Our programs are grouped by skill level and experience rather than just age:
- Rookies: For children who are new to basketball. We focus on basic coordination, simple skills, and having fun while learning the rules of the game.
- Foundation: For players who have some experience and are ready to build solid fundamentals such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and basic footwork.
Development: For players who are confident with the basics and want to improve their game understanding, decision-making, and team play in a more challenging environment. - Advanced: For experienced players who are training at a competitive level. Sessions are higher intensity and focus on advanced skills, tactics, and game performance.
Q: Can my child switch programs mid-term?
Program changes are evaluated on a case-by-case basis in consultation with coaches to ensure the best fit for your child’s development.
Q: Are classes conducted in English or Chinese?
Our head coach is bilingual and can provide instruction in both English and Chinese as needed.
Q: What if my child misses a session?
If a player misses a session due to personal reasons (e.g. sickness, holidays, other activities), we are usually unable to provide refunds. Where possible, and subject to availability, we may offer a make-up session within the same term in a suitable class.
Q: What happens if JM Sports cancels a session?
If we need to cancel a session (for example due to coach illness, venue issues, or safety concerns), we will either schedule a make-up session or apply a credit towards a future term. We will notify parents via email/WeChat/text as soon as possible.
Q: Do you run sessions on public holidays and school holidays?
Our regular weekly sessions generally follow the New Zealand school term dates.
During school holidays, we do offer separate Holiday Programmes at Avondale College. These camps are open for registration independently from our regular term classes, and dates and details are announced in advance on our website and social media.
Q: What are your behaviour and safety expectations?
We expect all players to show respect to coach, teammates, referees, and facilities. Bullying, aggressive behaviour, or unsafe conduct is not accepted. If a child’s behaviour repeatedly affects the safety or experience of others, we may ask them to sit out or, in serious cases, withdraw from the program.
Q: Do parents need to stay during the session?
For younger players, we recommend that a parent or guardian remain nearby during training. For older players, parents are welcome to stay and watch or return at the end of the session. In all cases, please ensure your child is dropped off and picked up on time.
Q: How do you handle injuries or medical conditions?
Please let us know about any medical conditions, allergies, or injuries when you register. Our coaches will take reasonable care and can provide basic first aid if needed. In an emergency, we will contact parents immediately and, if required, seek medical assistance.
Q: Do you take photos or videos during training?
From time to time, we may take photos or short videos for coaching review and JM Sports promotional use (website, social media, etc.). If you do not wish your child to appear in any media, please let us know in writing and we will respect your preference.
Q: Can my child change levels or switch classes during the term?
Yes, if our coaches feel your child is in a group that is too easy or too challenging, we may recommend moving them to a more suitable class, subject to space. You are also welcome to talk to us if you feel a change would benefit your child.
Q: How do I enroll my child?
Simply complete our online registration form, select your preferred program and location, and complete the payment process.
Q: What if I have more questions?
lease don’t hesitate to contact us by phone or email. We’re happy to answer any questions and help you find the right program for your child!
