Tips for Parents: Supporting Your Young Basketball Player
As a parent of a young basketball player, you play a crucial role in your child’s athletic journey. Here are Coach Jet’s top 5 tips for supporting your aspiring athlete:
1. Focus on Effort, Not Just Results
It’s tempting to celebrate only when your child scores or wins, but the real victories happen in practice. Did they hustle on defense? Did they encourage a teammate? Did they keep trying after missing several shots? These efforts deserve recognition.
What to say: “I loved seeing how hard you worked today!” instead of “Why didn’t you score more points?”
2. Let Them Experience Failure Safely
Missing shots, losing games, and making mistakes are essential parts of learning. Resist the urge to fix everything or make excuses. Instead, help your child process disappointment and find lessons in setbacks.
What to say: “That was tough. What do you think you could practice to improve?” instead of “The referee was unfair” or “Your teammates let you down.”
3. Encourage Practice at Home
Just 15-20 minutes of ball handling or shooting practice at home can significantly accelerate progress. Make it fun—challenge them to beat their own record, practice together, or create little games.
Tip: A basketball hoop in the driveway or nearby park provides endless opportunities for skill development.
4. Be the Best Cheerleader, Not the Coach
Unless you’re a trained basketball coach, your role at games and practice is to support, not instruct. Conflicting messages from parents and coaches can confuse young players. Trust the coaching process.
What to do: Cheer positively, but let Coach Jet handle the technical guidance.
5. Prioritise Enjoyment
The moment basketball becomes a chore, motivation disappears. Check in regularly: “Are you having fun?” If the answer is no, explore why. Sometimes a different program level or simply less pressure can reignite the spark.
Remember: The goal at this age is to develop a lifelong love of the game and movement.
At JM Sports, We Partner With Parents: We believe that the best outcomes happen when coaches and parents work together. If you ever have questions or concerns about your child’s development, Coach Jet’s door is always open.
